EXPERIMENTAL OBSERVATION OF THE ANDERSON TRANSITION WITH ATOMIC MATTER WAVES




Using cold atoms trapped in a time-dependent optical lattice, we study experimentally the Anderson transition from a localized regime to a diffusive regime. Although there is no disorder but chaos in the system, it can be shown to be substantially equivalent to the Anderson model. Sensitive measurements of the atomic wavefunction dynamics and the use of finite-size scaling techniques make it possible to extract both the critical parameters and the critical exponent of the transition.
