SZILARD'S ENGINE REVISITED: DC CURRENT AND PARTICLE
TRAPPING
Szilard's engine is a machine that extracts mechanical work from
information entropy. I propose a new mechanism to generate a dc current
of particles at
zero bias based on the basic principle of Szilard's engine. It is
shown that a dc current arises if the transport process in one
direction is maintained
coherent while the process in the opposite direction is
incoherent. I provide possible implementations of the idea using an
atomic Michelson
interferometer and a ring interferometer. I also discuss
possibility of particle trapping induced by the interplay between
coherence and
decoherence.e characterization of multipartite entanglement is a
central problem
in quantum information and many-body systems theory. We introduce
the notion of maximally multipartite entangled states of n qubits
as a generalization of the bipartite case. These pure states have a
bipartite
entanglement that does not depend on the bipartition and is
maximal for all possible bipartitions. They are solutions of a
minimization problem.
Examples for small n are investigated, both analytically and
numerically via deterministic and stochastic algorithms.
